[History] Races

Humans

On Zoshnel's temperate terrain there were plenty of flora and fauna to be found that had been on the original Rael landmass - and so those here changed very little in appearance besides the dramatic increase in brain size. Mentally, however, they became more and more inventive with their tools and more curious about the world around them and how it came to be. And so they set out to discover the workings of their environments and how to make them better. They found that the world worked according to natural laws that were immovable and undefiable, and from the study of the world they lived on they learnt much about the creation of new materials and technologies. However, when they discovered the elves, whose magic defied these laws, they could not cope with it – and so magic was banned on Zoshnel to preserve the scientific view of the world and prevent the introduction of doubts into ordinary people. Humans take a very dim view of letting Elves onto the continent of Zoshnel at all for fear of their “heresy” undermining the laws of science.

Elves

On Baasar, however, some kind of background radiation lead to the small remaining Homo erectus population developing the pointed ears and finely tuned brain that are associated with increased magical abilities, and they experimented with the properties of plants to prolong their lives. They are a very isolated species – they dislike contact with other races, but tolerate the Aerinthians as they travel a lot and bring knowledge to Baasar.

Vampires

They were normal Humans at first, left on a tiny island named Fohrenfeit - however, a virulent plague struck upon the island. Carried by gnats, no one was spared - many died, and those strong enough to survive were left with an uncontrollable desire to taste blood upon their tongues and mutated genes that lead to all their offspring having a similar bloody thirst, as well as blue hair and the ability to shapeshift into the form of a bat. Animals were not plentiful enough to satisfy the appetites of the plague survivors, and so they migrated to Zoshnel in search of better food. Here, they discovered the Humans and feasted upon them, but some of the plague survivors abhorred the state they had been reduced to and refused to drink the blood of those that looked like they did. And so many Humans were spared by the chivalrous actions of these few conscientious objectors. Those who resented the Humans for their plague-free state continued to feast upon Human blood, and their thirst lead to many Humans dying in their arms. So even though many Vampires did not drink blood, they were still the victims of discrimination by Humans due to the actions of those who did.

Levians

the Leviasis were originally a band of Homo erectus living on the coastline of Grazus. The population was small, numbering 500 or less, and they made their living fishing from the sea and selling their catches to the handful of Human settlements on Grazus, which had been isolated from those on Upper Zoshnel by the land breakup. However, a freak genetic mutation was introduced into the population due to their exclusive diet on redtail fish, which lead to them evolving into a shapeshifting race, their form governed by the lunar cycle. Mysterious markings appeared on their arms, legs and faces, and the pigmentation in their eyes changed. At quarter, half and full moon, their bodies change and they become monstrous sea serpents, beautiful yet terrifying. The other Humans living inland were frightened of the Leviasis and ostracised them, even though their serpent form still retained intelligence and would not attack others without reason. Fear driving them, the Humans built boats and departed en masse for Upper Zoshnel, leaving the Leviasis behind. Then the Leviasis were discovered by Orcs, who were wary but not frightened of them. They decided to incorporate the Leviasis into the rite of passage to adulthood for young Orcs - they could not be recognised as an adult till they had killed a Leviasis in serpent form, and so many Leviasis were murdered by the Orcs. The Leviasis festival celebrating the transformations became a festival of death. Suddenly a huge proportion of the Leviasis population disappeared, leaving only a cluster of them living in a single village on the coastline. What has happened to them, it remains to be discovered, for the Leviasis keep themselves to themselves and no longer associate with the other races on Zoshnel.

Darkanians

According to history, Darkanians were created from a part of the Goddess of Darkness, hence their name. After the great war the race became scattered across the world and little is known about them. Groups of Darkanians still exist that worship the Goddess of Darkness, but for most of them religion seems to be something not to spend too much time on.

Aerinthians

Aerinthians are, like the Darkanians, created from a part of a God, in this case Ruhma. Aerinthians were created to destroy the Darkanians, and so they travel the world hunting the last ones down. However, most Aerinthians these days seem to be forgetting about this task, and they often settle down in one place to create a family. Being created from a part of a God, Aerinthians often consider themselves superior over other races, and they like telling others what to do. This doesn't make them a very popular race, unlike the Darkanians, who due to their habit of keeping their nose out of other people's business, are generally getting more accepted in society.

Orcs

Grazus was a most inhospitable terrain area - forced to move south by the death of their home forests and desertification of the upper continent, the Orcs spent much time in the darker forests, where short stature but the physical strength to battle the forest predators became inbred into the population, along with a very aggressive temperament and rough, scaly skin to protect against the harsh leaves of the forest shrubs. Living in these more predatory forests forced them to invent more sophisticated weapons and work in teams rather than alone - they became more and more advanced as a war race, and progressively covered more territory of Grazus until their rapidly expanding population became too big to house... and so came the building of boats as they set out into the oceans of Rael to discover new lands to take over.
