View Full Version : Proper English

Please do not use AOL Speek ('u', 'ur', 'ne 1', etc.) If you are too lazy or stupid to use normal English, don't expect anyone to want to read your post.
I've noticed a lot of people breaking this rule for the longest time. Yet I never see anyone doing anything about it. I realize this must be hard to enforce, but isn't there anything we can do to stop people from this horrible lazy abuse? I've seen so many posts using this kind of speech that my eyes have started to bleed. I really think it's gotten out of hand. I'll admit I've seen scoldings from some to others about this, but that never really seemed to accomplish anything. Almost every single new member I see joining seems to think "o htey'l totaly b abl 2 reed tis". I sometimes actually find things illegible due to these lazy typers. I even start to wonder if they know proper English!

I really think this issue needs more paying attention to. I'm sick and tired of it! I don't know about vBulletin, but I've seen other forums that can censor out certain words and replace them with others. Now, I don't know if that would work, but I think there must be something we can do? Or is this one of those unsolvable problems?

Yhea it's ok to do that when your chatting with your friends, But it's not ok to do it here. We are a forum that whants to help SOME people that ask us a question. But we woun't help you if you wriite in l33t. And if your just to lazy, the GO AWAY!!

I'm not too picky about it if it's used outside of semi-serious topics.

The only way to fix this problem is to have a zero tolerance rule (which would only hurt the forums; so I dislike), or use a type of plugin.

A long while back, I believe Angelic was talking about a plugin that translates text talk to proper English. Something didn't work out with it though and things remained as they were.

sometimes people can't write decent english because they're not actually english-literate (foreign etc), so if a rule is strictly enforced, people may end up being in trouble for something they can't help...
@maestrosetti, you do know now you're going to have to be extra vigilant when writing because people are gonna dissect all your post for bad grammer and then go *nah nah hypocrite* lol^.^

No, typos and grammatical errors are different from what we abolish... It's more the annoying language people tend to use which only makes it harder to read and longer to write.

Besides, both Angelic and me (just an example) live in non-English speaking countries and we don't need to replace "you" "be" "for" and all those other short, easily spelled words into gibberish.

Word censors are a pain and generally mess things up. We used to have a warning system when the rule was created, when vBulletin gets a warning system we'll surely use that to enforce this rule better.

Besides, when we auto-turned 'u' into 'you' it kept screwing up the formatting in the RP and such, lol. Without the warning system, it's hard to enforce the rules sometimes, so I'm another one who will be VERY happy when it upgrades to a warning system!

Until then, we'll just keep TRYING to drum it into people's heads, I guess! And refusing to bloody well accept RP profiles with txt spk in them =_= Lookie! I plugged the RP twice! Come join XD

I think a warning system would be a great thing to bring back. I've noticed how I have replaced it with giving out insults instead.

I tend to try and copy their lousy use of language when saying that they suck, but they don't seem to understand.

Maybe you could close the little title-tag under our usernames for public changing and use a number warning thing and then PM them about it when they get another tally or somthing. I would miss being able to make titles but if it helps..

*just an idea...*

=( but that would mean citing specific instances of them doing something wrong or people would repeat warnings for the samething. unless each post can only be used for one warning.

Apparently there's a few that do that each year in our AST (biggest exam of all..).. they get nervous that they're not going to finish and turn to txtspk to get everything finished.

True, but I think the rule is intended to prevent EgReGiOuS aBuSeS oF wRiTtEn LaNgUaGe incloodn th einability 2 use puntuatonthespacebar or resonble attempt sat speling. Basically, as long as I can understand what you're saying without difficulty, then I'd let it go.

About filters, though: some people have the amazing ability to defy all attempts to make sense of what they say. If humans can't figure out what they're saying, then the computer sure can't

Personally I think it's a bit stupid to use Japanese while having to provide an English translation anyway. That's the problem with this place, it's full of Wapanese people, or in other words, people who want to be Japanese, but never will be.

But I am Japanese and when I'm mad I yell at people in japanese... I know it's stupid, but it's fun to see everyone's weird backgrounds. For instance, Irc is still within Ichigo rules, but as said in gen chat everyone was speaking different languages today.

Your IP says you're from Hawaii...

Saying "I'm Japanese" won't convince anyone here, we've had too many people claiming that and no one ever had anything to back up that claim ;)

-.-; I mean... I could prove it to you.... but what would be the point of that?
I could say that my myspace (myspace.com/crimsondomain) is sort of proof, but ah well -.-;
I'm half chinese and half Japanese so yeah...
there is not much point lying about nationality anyway. Japan is too racist -.-; they don't even accept full bloods that don't speak fluently.
Hawaii and Canada have the largest outside asia asian communities =3

You could be a Japanese living in Hawaii. Not that it matters. Rules, baby, rules.
As logic goes, the only place you can realistically use japanese words here without breaking any rules is in names (of compositions, usernames etc) and the learning japanese thread.

There is no use lying about nationalities, but still a lot of people do it because they think it makes them cool or something.

Also, your myspace is no proof, I only get noise and a bunch of anime and game images =P

Don't call me mean T_T It's not that I'm saying you're a liar, I'm just cautious about believing people who claim to be Japanese cos I've seen enough of them who lied about that in order to look cool. A typical case of idiots screwing it up for others.
