View Full Version : Server upgrade
Gand

The server that hosts Ichigos.com and the forums has been upgraded! As some of you might know, since taking over hosting of Ichigo's in 2003, the server has always been on a dedicated server, which means I rent the server which someone else maintains. However, now I have my very own 1U server which Ichigo's is now running on. :D
Old machine
---
1U something
Single 2.0 GHz P4 Xeon
1.0 GB RAM
120 GB 7.2k rpm SATA drive
New machine
---
HP ProLiant DL360
Dual 3.0 GHz Xeon w/HT (4 logical CPUs)
4.0 GB RAM
36 GB 15k rpm SCSI RAID-1 drives
I also moved to a datacenter in downtown LA that has triple redundant power, cooling and networking.
So Ichigo's and the forums will be able to scale to meet demand in todays fast-paced economy ... or some such nonsense :heh:
Let me know if anything is broken

I'm having problems logging onto IRC through GAIM since the switch. Is there something I need to setup differently?

You are thick aren't you? Normally Gand is always on IRC, and now he's not.

But he is always sysop and there isn't one?
Why is that so?

@Original Post -
THANKS GAND! I'm glad you like Ichigo's enough to even put it on your own server now.
If I could, I'd love to donate.. Maybe when I get a job and my parents aren't all constricting.

Thick indeed, it's free to make a paypal account and you'd know that if you paid attention.

Somewhere in this vast planet we call Earth exist parents, sometimes we borrow from them or ask for favors. - not that I'm asking you to ask them, only a suggestion of what others occasionally do in your situation.

Doesn't take much more that £10 and an interveiw to get a credit/debit card. It will just be an under 19's account which is basically a classic one.

FYI, if you're under 18, you can't have a PayPal account. You'll have to have an adult set one up and "borrow" it. So technically Meer, Sir Jaso can't get a PayPal account

Sorry, but I'll never use paypal. Too many loopholes in the contract, and I've heard too many horror stories. 'Tis why I have yet to donate.

And yet somehow underage "children," I suppose are using PayPal to purchase items, etc. These rules are enforced as much as the "you must be 13 years or older," agreement when signing up on Ichigos.

There is one of those?
Oh... and just for reference... how often are these forums pruned?

So that means if someone really hated Ichigos, they could call a COPPA violation and slap us with a $20000 fine?

I'm well aware of that; however, even if just about every forum breaks COPPA, it's one of those things that you simply shouldn't...admit :P

PayPal can just link to a bank account as opposed to a credit card... that's what mine does. No credit cards for me. And, I will donate, if I ever happen to have any spare money, so in... errr.. four years maybe? My trip and Uni have to be paid for before I have spare, unfortunately! Anywayyy.. go upgrades :D

No, it's the members who say they are over 13, they check that little checkbox after all.

By signing up all members agree that they are all least 13 years of age and therefore not covered under COPPA. Ichigo's is not legally responsibile if they choose to lie when signing up.

Out of curiosity, does Ichigo's become responsible if a member chooses to lie about his/her age when signing up but then reveals his/her real age in a forum post with no resulting action taken by Ichigo's?

No. The member agreed to this when signing up. As far as we know, all members are over 13, and if a member chooses to lie then we can't be held responsible, even if they admit it in a post.
That said, if you are under 13, you really shouldn't be here.

Aha! That reminds me, I did meet a twelve year old here once and he certainly should not have been here. He was about as immature as.. Wolfgoddess. Yes that's right. And he typed as if he didn't know one end of the keyboard from the other if you labelled them in big red letters. So I made a well-mannered comment and he went ballistic and sent me "hate" mail. (Seriously, you have to expand your vocabulary before attempting to verbally tear someone apart.) Ah well. Can't be helped.
