first a bit about me.
trumpet player
play in a marching band, concert band and sing in a choir
hope to do a degree in composition and write film music.
now i havent written anything in about 4 months and what i have "completed" is fairly crappy so heres something i was working on
first is a "full" orchestral piece
athemtatic
utilises a repetitive "high" note (thus title)
uses odd rhythms
is very different for me
second is a solo trumpet piece with piano accompaniment
very slow
like a funeral march
utilises tone over technique for the trumpet
a "building" piece
thanks, criticism is preferred over acknowledgement
EDIT --
I've decide to write a "themed" piano "sonata" (I'm not sure what you call it maybe concerto?)
its called "when will you return"
the first movement "memories" is about the girl hoping remiscing about her hero. towards the end we see lots of movement and then the clock strikes twelve and her world starts to slow down.
the next movement is a direct continuation. again beginning with the bell toll, it is darker, dissonant and in one part (youll hear it) im not happy with both the bass line repetition and the ending.

Height: Very good! Just sometimes I couldn't tell exactly what effect you were going for, but that was probably just the staleness in the midi file.
Trumpet solo: I thought the trumpet melody was very good. But, I can't say the accompaniment. While it did compliment the melody chord-ally, it didn't compliment it rhythmically. Also, don't be afraid to switch up the chord progression every now and then. But I'm not one to talk, because that's one of my biggest problems. xD
Overall, VERY good though!

height was awesome. i don't know what you mean by odd melody. does that mean melody is only carried out on 1st and 3rd beat?
do you use finale?

oh thanks haha.
i did use finale but am a sibelius convert..
by odd rhythms i was trying to say that i rarely write multimetric and that the transition from the original style to the "marching" style was really awkward.
uploading two more comps
1st is my first comp i had too write for year 11
cello and piano piece
very repetitive (as per criteria)
based on the c minor arpegio
relies on a transition through rhythms rather than melody.
second is my current work in progress "it all starts with one"
very hazy at the moment
original ostinato melody will return after or during this segment

The start of "It all starts with one" felt very cold, like a place with low temperature, snow and empty of any living being. I got that cool scenario visualized. Then all turn in action! The melody repeating in the moving part got annoying with its repetition. Would be better to prolong it rather than repeat it.
When you dare, you go further, experience new things and learn.

Yeah, for all that you do with rhythm, we could really use some variation in at least the rhythm of the melody in "It All Starts with One." You modulate it, but we need a little bit more.
I am a cellist, and let me tell you why I would be hesitant to play "Piano Solo with Cello for Real." It is very much a "piano solo with cello." The soloist feels like a parenthetical addition. If you're worried about the cellist's ability (since this is an 11 year old), take a page out of Saint-Saëns' book and write a piece with a simple, beautiful melody, supported by a sparkly piano. Check this out to see what I mean.Get sheet music here!

i definitely see what you mean. twas' a composition assignment for school "music for small ensembles" and the catch line was that all parts had to be as important as eachother

memories - it was nicely done. totally sounds like the title. it was a little slow i thought in the beginning but you made a nice transition... enough to make me almost forget that i thought it was slow. memories... am i right, or what? lol
