Not really channels, but moreso different IRC servers: Freenode (programming related) and Rizon (anime related). Ichigos only has 1 channel that is active, #Ichigos.

I should forewarn everyone that there's a high possibility that Ichigos' IRC server will be shut down in the coming year due to mass inactivity over the past 3-4 months. There has been little aversion from the Staff on this decision.

I think the main concern here is that there is not enough people to provide the constant moderation the channel requires to keep honest people honest.

Is there really a reason to keep it open when it's consistently dead like this? I for one, have always liked IRC. This is why I've always offered my support for that section of the forums, even when I determined I couldn't handle both the forum and IRC about a year ago, I chose to oversee IRC instead of the forums. The problem is that I can no longer justify to the rest of the staff keeping it running. Even if we added more to the Ichigos staff, it wouldn't help, as I've done this in private with several choice people, and there were only 11 cases out of the 1022 when they actually acted with this responsibility addendum.

Rather than managing an open / live chat system which has always had mixed feelings from the community, we decided that reviving old niches that Ichigos used to have, and allocating the staff appropriately. With that reallocation, and under the above consideration, IRC is a resource hog to this community. It is better to focus everyone onto one feature of the community rather than divert its focus.

In retrospect, IRC was originally implemented as a way to relieve sever stress from the abnormally hight activity in the General Chat thread. The staff here implemented the final part of the plan about six months ago and completely rid ichigos from the thread and switched rapid communication to IRC. As everyone here is aware, this plan failed and caused the community to stagnate. Given our current activity, IRC lost its raison d'être.

But M, you see the problem with IRC is that its always active so people go on and off whenever. Out of the lets say 6 times I've been on IRC only once have people been active and talking.

If you really wanted to make IRC work I would suggest times and topics. So make a thread for example notifying other users that the IRC has a "meeting" planned for ((date/time)) and the topic will be ((topic)).

This way people will know that other users will be on and talking about something, rather than saying join in whenever. It will just work better, in my opinion.

I used to be in the skype room all the time because that's what I mainly used to chat. Now I use msn as my main tool, resulting in my not logging on skype at all anymore.
